Savin Scale and Ludwig Scale
This test was named after the doctor who founded it, Dr. Savin. It was developed over 20 years ago and uses a simple chart in order to determine type as well as the degree of female pattern hair loss. The scale looks at three different areas of the head: frontal loss, which looks at the degree of thinning in the area of the hairline and temples; mid-scalp, also commonly known as the widening of the part; and the crown of the head. The Ludwig Scale is a similar test that measures the extent of the hair loss. It separates the stages into four specific types, with the first type being the least extreme and the last type being the most extreme.
Consult with your primary healthcare doctor to determine any underlying issue, such as an over or underactive thyroid, or perhaps an autoimmune disorder. Your doctor may order a blood test to determine if this is, in fact, the cause. The lab may check the test for sufficient vitamin levels, such as vitamin D, B-12, and biotin. The blood test may also measure iron and thyroid levels, VDRL, which is a screening for syphilis, a complete blood count, iron binding capacity, and more.
Hair Pull Test
The hair pull test is a rather simple procedure. The hair loss specialist will gently tug on a small section of the hair to measure the amount that comes out with the pull. It is normal for 2 or 3 hairs to come out during this test. However, if excessive hair loss results from nothing more than a gentle pull, it may indicate a more serious health problem that needs your doctor's attention.
One Minute Hair Count
This is another simple test that measures the amount of hair loss. It does so by having the person comb their hair for 60 seconds and then assessing the amount of hair that is lost in the process. Everyone should keep in mind that the average person loses 50-100 strands of hair per day, so losing a few strands of hair during the combing process is not a cause for concern. However, if an excessive amount of hair is lost during the one-minute combing session, especially under otherwise normal conditions, then it may indicate an underlying health issue.
Head First Trichology Examination
Regardless of any health issues requiring your doctor's care, hair loss needs to be addressed at the scalp and hair follicle level. Healthy hair can only grow from a healthy scalp. Any conditions that prevent blood flow and nutrients to the hair follicles will stifle hair regrowth and result in hair loss. As a Head First Hair Renewal Center, LH Hair specialist can provide you with a microscopic examination using proprietary software. This consultation is free and painless.
By showing you magnified pictures of what's happening on your scalp, your Head First specialist can customize a program to repair the damage and generate regrowth. Even if there is no hair in the follicle, if it is still alive, new hair growth can be accomplish. But hurry. Time is of the essence because once the hair follicle dies, there is no way to regrow your hair.
