6 Tips for Women to Prevent Hair Loss

Styling is one thing, but protection is another. In fact, it can be difficult to take proper care of your hair. Perhaps you are using too many heat tools or harmful hair products, without worrying enough about their long-term effects. That's when some women find that they are dealing with hair loss.

Your hair can begin to thin for a variety of reasons. You might have started a new diet, are under a lot of stress, or are going through hormonal shifts. In that case, don't panic. Here are some tips that you can incorporate into your everyday life to prevent hair loss.

1. Know Your Hormones

If you've experienced a pregnancy, you might already understand the role that hormones play in hair growth and hair loss. If you haven't, you may not even realize their direct effect on your hair. Estrogen, Insulin, Testosterone, and your thyroid all play a big role in hair growth. Too much of these can cause your hair to thin. Get your hormones checked to see whether they are influencing your hair loss, and find out about next steps.

2. Take Care of the Root

When it comes to maintaining strong and healthy hair, you have to take good care of your scalp. In fact, you may already be aware of this--there's a reason that when you go to a salon and your get your hair washed, the stylist typically spends a lot of time thoroughly cleansing not just your hair, but also your scalp.

Cleanliness matters, but moisture does as well. If you suffer from a dry scalp, your hair also tends to be dry. That, in turn, makes it easier to damage and fall out. Keep your scalp clean and prevent excess dryness to prevent that effect.

3. Be Cautious When Using Heat

Your scalp is not the only thing that can cause your hair to dry out. If you use heat when styling your hair, your hair can become brittle as a result. This is especially true if you dry, straighten or curl your hair on an everyday basis.

These items can cause damage to your hair, ultimately leading it to break off. To solve the problem, either reduce your usage of heat tools, or switch to high-quality products designed to protect your hair from the high heat.

4. Try Supplements

If none of the above help, don't despair. Instead, consider taking a supplement. Biotin, for example, is a great choice for hair loss. It's helpful to the body because of its keratin, a protein that provides structure in your body and manifests itself in your skin, nails, and hair. By adding this supplement to your diet, you are giving your body's natural keratin infrastructure a boost, working directly to prevent hair loss.

5. Manage Stress Better

Just like many other aspects of your health, stress plays a key role in hair loss. If you are stressed, you may actually find yourself playing with your hair. In doing so, you may actually be pulling your hair out at the same time.

Stress can also cause your hair follicles to go into a resting phase, called Telogen effluvium. As a result, brushing or combing your hair, will actually pull it out more easily than it would otherwise. That's why it is important to find ways of dealing with your daily stress.

You can go for a run, write in a journal, meditate, yoga or even simply talk about your stress to others so you don't have to go through it alone, and make some time for yourself to do something that you enjoy. No matter your preferred solution, better stress management is vital to prevent hair loss.

6. Try A New Hairstyle

You may not realize this, but your hairstyle could be a culprit. In fact, pulling your hair up and away from your face actually causes stress on it. The hairs are pulled very tight, which means you might actually begin to recede your own hairline.

So if you are trying to prevent hair loss, be sure to not wear your hair up all the time. When you do, try to keep it loose. The tighter you pull your hair, the more damage you are causing.
