Protect Your Hair from the Summer Sun

After so many weeks of winter, it’s wonderful to see some sunshine again—and if you’re like us, you’re excited for plenty of opportunities to be outside this summer, swimming, sitting poolside, or simply enjoying the sun’s warm glow.

While you enjoy the summer weather, though, we encourage you to also protect yourself. That means wearing sunscreen. It means staying hydrated. And it means protecting your hair.

That’s because, though the summer sun is life-giving in so many ways, it can actually be quite damaging to your hair and scalp. It can strip your hair of its moisture, leaving it limp, dry, and brittle. It can also cause your scalp to become burned, or to develop a rash.

The question is, what can you do to ensure your hair and scalp are healthy, even during summer’s glare? Here are just a few tips and solutions from LH Hair.

How to Protect your Hair From the Sun

Go Easy on the Chemicals

Chemical treatments tend to dry out your hair—and during a season when your hair is already quite dry, it’s best to use them sparingly. We’d recommend that you avoid new coloring or other chemical treatments to your hair as best as possible. The more natural you can be in your hair care, the better.

Use Conditioner

As the sun dries out your hair, you can replenish its moisture by using rinse-out conditioners. Find one that’s well-suited for your hair type; if you’d like a recommendation, LH Hair can provide you with one.

Shampoo Carefully

Shampooing can also dry out your hair so most people resolve  this problem by shampooing less often.  This can be a major mistake if there is build-up on the scalp, which can lead to scalp disease and hair loss.  It's not shampooing your hair often that causes the problem; it's the products used that cause the dryness.  We recommend consulting with LH Hair to find the best shampoo and conditioner products for your particular scalp needs.  By using a microscopic camera to examine your scalp,  our certified technician can identify scalp issues that may go unnoticed and prescribe solutions that keep your scalp healthy and lead to beautiful hair.

Be Careful When You Swim

We recommend not shampooing just before you swim, but instead jump in the shower and rinse out all that chlorine after you swim. Using a swim cap can also be fairly helpful in keeping your hair safe.

Ease Up on Heat Appliances

Heat appliances—think blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons, etc.—can all dry out your hair. Once again, the summer sun is going to be drying your hair plenty, so try to scale back on your use of heat appliances as much as possible.

Wear Hats and Scarves

Of course, one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to protect your hair from the sun is to put on a hat or a scarf when you’re going to be outside for a long period of time!
