Five Bad Habits That Lead to Hair Loss

Five Bad Habits That Lead to Hair Loss

Many of us have everyday habits that we may not realize are contributing to hair loss. While we know the habits are unhealthy, we don't know just how important it is to break them. There are many things that factor into how our hair looks. Whether it be that your hair is full and healthy, or brittle and thinning, chances are, your daily routine is the cause.

Below, we will take a look at five bad habits that can lead to hair loss.

Smoking

Make it a top priority to kick this habit for good! This habit reduces circulation to the extremities and pollutes the blood, negatively impacting the liver. Combined with sebum, smoking also clogs the pores on the scalp. The hair follicles need vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients for healthy growth, and the impaired circulation caused by smoking reduces these minerals. In addition, the chemicals in cigarette smoke are toxic to the hair follicles.

Hot Styling Tools

While we all want to achieve straight, shiny hair, or go for a curly look once in a while, keep in mind that regular use of hot styling tools can be contributing to hair loss. The proteins that make up the hair and cuticle are damaged by the hot temperatures, causing a lack of moisture. As a result, the hair falls out. It is best to limit the use of hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons to no more than twice a week.

Poor Hygiene

Everyone knows the convenience of skipping a hair wash every now and then. However, constant poor hygiene makes hair susceptible to falling out. When a person does not wash their hair often enough, products and excessive dandruff build up on the scalp, clogging hair follicles, and causing hair to fall out. Hair should be washed at least every two days, more so if you sweat excessively or use a lot of styling products.

Crash Dieting

There is an abundance of reasons why crash dieting is unhealthy, and hair loss is definitely one. It can be tempting to try the latest fad diet that promises extreme weight loss in a short amount of time. This drastic reduction of calories puts your body into starvation mode. Consequently, your body uses the little energy that it has left toward functions such as supporting the heart and brain. Those who do not consume a healthy, balanced diet such as lean proteins, beans, eggs, and plenty of fruits and vegetables find that hair loss can be a result.

Daily Wear Of Tightly Pulled Hairstyles

We all find the need to pull our hair back into a ponytail, bun, or braid from time to time. However, when we do this too often, the tugging and pressure that is put on the hair cause it to break and fall out. Even worse is when the hair is pulled back into a tight hairstyle when it is wet. In order to prevent hair from falling out from tight hairstyles, limit wearing these styles to two or three times per week. Always make sure hair is fully dried before you style it in an updo in order to help reduce the risk of hair loss.

Hair loss can often be preventable if you're aware of things that are contributing factors! If you notice that your hair is falling out, determine if your daily routine may be the cause. Testimonials

  • I have worn my hair at shoulder length for several years and in the past three or four years noticed that as I am aging, so is my hair! I wanted to add a little fullness to my hair, and one of my girlfriends, who is also a client of Lisa's, suggested I go in and see her. Lisa was great when we met and went over several ideas and options with me to give me the look I was wanting to achieve!
